Why we built MGR
Maldives Gear Rentals — MGR for short — is built around the water and the people who live beside it: the reef, the lagoon, and the gear that lets you actually get out on them.
The idea started with a familiar problem. Travellers arrive in the Maldives having paid overweight fees to fly their own dive kit, drone or paddleboard halfway around the planet — gear that sits in a bag most of the trip. Meanwhile islanders own perfectly good kit that goes unused for months between their own trips.
MGR connects the two. A guesthouse owner on Maafushi rents out the kayaks she uses on weekends. A dive instructor on Dhigurah lists the second regulator set he keeps for friends. A traveller lands with a carry-on and is on the reef the same afternoon — and the money stays in the local economy.
We built the payment side around how the Maldives actually pays: bank transfer by slip. You transfer the rental plus a refundable deposit, upload the slip, and our team verifies it before any gear changes hands. No one hands over a dive kit on a promise, and no renter pays into thin air.
What we stand for
The four ideas MGR is built on
Travel lighter
A dive kit is 20 kilos you shouldn't have to fly across three time zones. Rent it where you land, give the gear back, and go home with a carry-on.
Locals earn from idle gear
That kayak in the storeroom and the drone used twice a year can pay for themselves. Owners set their own rate and get paid to their BML or MIB account.
Honest, verified payments
We don't pretend cards are universal here. You pay by bank slip, our team verifies the transfer, and the handover only happens once the money has landed.
Deposits that come back
Every rental carries a refundable security deposit, shown as its own clear line. Return the gear in good condition and it's released within 48 hours.
Two ways to be part of it
Rent gear for your trip, or list the kit you already own and let it earn its keep between adventures.
